Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is a success." We couldn’t agree more with Mr Ford’s thoughts on why teamwork is so crucial. After all, Glaslyn Care Homes' smooth day-to-day running is only possible because of the incredible team behind it.
One integral member of our team, Deborah Evans, has been with Glaslyn Care Homes for nearly 14 years and has seen some significant changes in her time. We spoke to Deborah about everything from her background to why she thinks Glaslyn Care Homes is a unique workplace.
Q: If you could introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your background…
A: I am the Operations Lead here at Glaslyn Care Homes. I’m a proud grandmother of two beautiful grandchildren: Sophia, who is six, and Lloyd, who was born in December 2022. I have always worked in the hospitality field. Originally, I tried my hand at being a chef and thought that would be the route I would take, but life throws you curve balls. After a few months, I decided this was not the path I wanted so I retrained as an Office Administrator. I worked in a 4* hotel as a part-time payroll clerk, then increased to full-time and I worked in the function office planning weddings, functions, dinner parties etc. I loved the buzz of organising events and I still do.
Q: How long have you worked at Glaslyn now and what are some of the changes and developments you've seen over the years?
A: I started work in Glaslyn in April 2009. I remember the day I came in for my interview with the then-owner Mrs Wright. It was a very relaxed interview and made even more special as Mrs Wright’s dog ‘Prince’ took a shine to me. The office in those days consisted of one computer which was only used for banking and payroll tasks. This quickly changed with a new computer ordered and up-to-date software. Glaslyn has moved on with technology in leaps and bounds and I have been at the heart of implementing new systems which have been exciting and at times very frustrating. Glaslyn is now a very modern, tech-friendly place to work and I’m looking forward to seeing how we can develop a system for the staff and our service users.
Q: As Glaslyn's Operations Lead, what's your favourite part of the job?
A: As Operations Lead, I enjoy all aspects of my work. I like to be organised and learn new things on the job. Like recently, I’ve started using a graphic design software system ’Canva’ to produce newsletters, Brighthr is a new HR system I’ve been using and much more. The job is busy but also very rewarding when you see your projects come to life and see how this can help team members and service users.
Q: How do you unwind after a busy day at Glaslyn Care Homes?
A: To unwind, I love to read and I’m a huge fan of crime novels; I love it when you get a book and you just can’t put it down. It’s not so good when you read late at night and have an early start the next day. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
